Honestly, Did Jehovah's Witnesses Do Anything POSITIVE For You?
by minimus ini was raised as a witness and am very thankful that i am out.
having said that, i think my upbringing produced positive qualities in me.
do you believe that anything positive came from your being a witness?

Would you trade one decent HS dance with a nice girl for all the talks in the ministry school? Hell yes. I think if I had more social contact i would have been a more open person instead of a gifted speaker. I would have had more fun in my teens and that would have been good. Most JW children are social cripples in the real world. Nothing I gained from JW's couldn't have been gotten elsewhere. Even Community College teaches public speaking, its a requirement by the way. -

inquiring mind has 3 questions
by OutsiderLookingIn injust a few questions from a newbie.
answer one or as many as you want.
1. why cleaners?
-
Wasanelder Once
1. JW's are not particularly cleaner than other people. Many are just the opposite. It is simply a convenience for JW's to become cleaners, windows, office etc. because it takes little mental effort and believe it or not they can do it without paying taxes because it is often a cash transaction. Others justify that they don't make enough to pay taxes and don't report it. The sad thing is there is no Soc Security points and thus no retirement. They will regret it. It makes it easier to schedule conventions and such when you are your own boss.
2. Yes, guilt runs deep. People leave for various reasons. Most to escape the pressure not the doctrines. Those that leave for doctrine seldom return. Everyone else is likely to have at least one relapse. That was me the first time I left. This time? No guilt, just education.
3. Can't answer that. was born to the breed but didn't join till 16.

Do People Have Spirits? What Do the Early Texts Say?
by Cold Steel infor years adventist sects, including the jws, have believed that the dead sleep at death and remain non-existent until the resurrection.
its strongest argument seems to be text in the non-escchatological book of ecclesiastes in the old testament.
although a part of the canon of scripture, the book is not written by a prophet, nor is there any prophecy or recognizable doctrine contained therein.

But what of the dog, camel or friendly finch? Ah you say, they have no soul, yet do they not breathe? If you cut them, do they not bleed? -

whats your take? When someone asks my wife what religion she is, she seems embarrassed to say she is a JW.
by goingthruthemotions inso thinking back about the times when someone has asked my wife what religion she is.
she sheepishly and seems almost embarrassed to say she is a jehovah witness.
when someone asks me, i just say i am a christian.

When I was half-assed I was embarrassed. Once I went full throttle drone I was a pain in the ass as I "boldly proclaimed my association with God's organization" though the sound of it always came across as corporate to me. -

Who can you trust to admit you have doubts?
by MrMonroe in(that is, doubts).
in margaret atwood's "the handmaid's tale", a futuristic story of life inside a repressive, abusive big brother-style society tightly controlled by religious fundamentalists, there's a passage in which the protagonist is alone with another woman at a state-controlled centre where prayers are generated -- then printed out and read out -- by a machine.
the other woman asks, in barely more than a whisper, "do you think god listens to these machines?

Doubts = Apostasy ..if you are too vocal. By simply expressing my doubts to a relative she started crying and saying, "I don't know who you are anymore!" She almost had a mental breakdown. Coming from me, substitute Pio School instructor, District Convention speaker etc. it was more than her brain could handle. I've backed off since then and we have a quiet truce going. No more doubts, so no need to mention them. I don't doubt, I KNOW that its not the "Truth" so why express them? -

O-Joe, you must know that sarcasm is almost impossible to convey in text because of a lack inflection. You will probably piss people off and spend time explaining yourself so don't give up. So happy for you that you had a life mostly free from WT shackles. Not many of us had that. Keep posting, it will help someone I am sure.
